galena - teaching hand specimen of the primary ore of lead
$ 7.50
Galena - PbS
Galena is a very common metallic sulfide. It often occurs in cubic crystals and has good cubic cleavage, which these specimens display. It is practically the only source of lead, which is used in huge amounts in storage batteries and in shielding from radioactivity. Its name is the Latin name for lead ore.
Galena is easily identified by students by its density, metallic luster and its cubic cleavage.
This galena comes from Morocco. This is a mineral that is expensive to ship, and it is often offered at a price that makes classroom specimens uneconomical. If you think this is expensive, compare with Ward's Science - Galena, Student Specimens 1" - 1 1/2"
The pencil is 5 1/2" inches long, for scale.
Select a specimen: When more than one specimen is shown, you can select a particular specimen by telling us what is in the photo with it, a black and silver pen, a black mechanical pencil, or one of those plus some number of coins, or you can let us make the selection.
