rhyolite - banded rhyolite from Montgomery Pass, Nevada - display specimen
$ 15.00
This banded rhyolite is associated with an obsidian flow in Montgomery Pass. Flow banding is a common texture in rhyolite flows.
Banding may have originated by the stretching of a magma that contained pre-existing zones of contrasting water composition as the magma flowed in the conduit and on the surface, as found in a study of a similar rhyolite flow in Arizona. An interesting example.
Cut on both sides, but not polished. Both sides are shown.
