The oil originates from the underlying Kreyenhagen shale. In the Alferitz, a \"shallow\" zone at a depth of 2,200 to 2,500 feet produces 19˚API gravity medium-heavy oil. A \"deep\" light oil zone produces 37˚API gravity crude. The gravity contrast exists because the Alfertiz is complexly faulted with sharp stratigraphic unconformities. The upper zone is influenced by meteoric water degradation. Marine sands or fractured shale lock in light 37˚ API gravity oil in the deeper zone.
