drill core - thick drill core section from an exploratory mining program in a skarn
Back in stock soon.
This drill core section came from an exploratory drilling program conducted at the Ward Mine in Nevada over half a century ago. It illustrates the veining that miners encounter when exploring for mineralized zones and would make an interesting addition to a classroom. An area where mineralization is suspected is drilled and cored to define the zone of ore and to aid in the development of a mining plan.
The Ward Mine is a polymetallic Cu, Au, Ag and Pb-Zn skarn deposit, where the contact between Paleozoic limestone and a quartz monzonite stock and dike swarm has been mineralized.
The mine produced sporadically from 1875 to 1991. Total production is estimated at more than 182 kilotons of ore containing >.05 tons gold, 28 tons silver, 1 kiloton of copper, 7.9 kilotons of lead, and 14.7 kilotons zinc.
