sand - dune sand - fine-grained yellow-brown dune sand derived from a sandstone member of the Menefee Formation in New Mexico - 250 ml display bottle with ground-glass stopper

$ 12.95

The Allison Member of the Upper Cretaceous Menefee Formation is a cliff-forming yellow brown sandstone. As it weathers, sand grains picked up by the wind form local small dunes north of Crownpoint, New Mexico. The grains in these dunes are very fine, similar in size to the grains in the pink dune sand that is derived from the Jurassic Navajo Sandstone in Utah.

It would be instructive for students to compare these two dune sands - both fine-grained but very different in color. Sand is derived from whatever materials are locally available, a lesson emphasized by these two very different colored dune sands.

These bottles are 250 ml, 5" high, with a ground glass stopper, and make a good display. Note that these have been affected by covid. No germs, but bottles from our regular supplier look like they were made by someone working remotely, grinding the stoppers by hand. Formerly the neck of the bottle and the stopper were machine ground and fit perfectly. Now the fit is loose, so we ship these with a cork, but supply the "rustic" glass stopper along with the cork until we run out of "covid specials" and can get machine-ground bottles again.
