sand - Franciscan Complex - chocolate brown beach sand derived from metamorphic rocks of the Franciscan Complex - 250 ml display bottle

$ 12.95

This brown-appearing sand is amazingly colorful when magnified, illustrating its  varied sources in the rocks of the Late Mesozoic Franciscan Complex. This is a chaotic assemblage of rocks that were scraped off the Farallon Plate as it subducted under the North American Plate. The Franciscan has widespread distribution in the Coast Ranges of California.

The entire short 200-meter-long Rockaway Beach, just south of Pacifica, California, is composed of this chocolate brown sand. Many beaches where the sand source is the metamorphic rocks of the Franciscan assemblage have relatively dark sand, often grayish.

These bottles are 250 ml, 5" high, with a ground glass stopper, and make a good display. Note that these have been affected by covid. No germs, but bottles from our regular supplier look like they were made by someone working remotely, grinding the stoppers by hand. Formerly the neck of the bottle and the stopper were machine ground and fit perfectly. Now the fit is loose, so we ship these with a cork, but supply the "rustic" glass stopper along with the cork until we run out of "covid specials" and can get machine-ground bottles again.
